Plastic chess pieces are basically colorless because of the polymers found in them. Metal chess sets are made of alloys like zinc, tin, copper, bronze, brass, aluminum and pewter.
Wooden chess sets are used nowadays for decoration purposes as well as for playing. These exotic woods are hardwoods and it is very difficult to carve on. This is the reason why wooden chess pieces are very valuable and expensive in the market.

I'm having trouble downloading the actual PDF. It's giving me a TOS error. WOW, that's pretty! I'd love to try it out myself, but the link to the template doesn't seem to work. Hi - I added the pattern picture in the article.
Not sure why the PDF didn't work. Thanks for letting me know. Steve - Thanks for the article and pdf on this piece. I really like it. May I ask what blade you used to cut out?
Hi Dave! In case you missed it, Steve Ramsey of Woodworking for Mere Mortals made a chess board in his first series of videos in He said his second project would be making the chess pieces, but it's been a long-running joke that he never made them.
So now, 6 years later, a group of us YouTube woodworkers conspired to make the chess pieces for him, and I was assigned to make the knights. Click here to see the chess pieces at the end of Steve's Mere Minutes video. Click here to see all of the chess pieces and who made them on Mike Fulton's site.
The key to 3D cutting is attaching the template to the block so that the fold line is precisely on the corner of the block. Cut the front view first, then tape the long curved cutoff pieces back in place with clear packing tape.
You may need to attach another copy of the side view template since some parts of it get cut away. Cut the side profile then remove all of the cutoff pieces to reveal the knight. Sand using a spindle sander, small files, and sand paper. Cut out the optional shield from thin stock and glue it on.
I shaped the shield with a spindle sander to give it a raised crease in the middle. However, you'll need to have proper attachments and an understanding of how the lathe works in order to best make use of the wood that you have. Read on for a brief guide to turning a wooden chess piece on a lathe. Chess set designs are available online and in various books on chess or woodworking.
You can come up with your own design for your pieces as well. If you aren't highly experienced at making small wooden pieces on a lathe, it may be better to begin with a simple design first.
The design should be life-size, and exactly the same shape that each piece would be, though in two dimensional, as if you traced the piece while it was laying down on the paper. Decide which type of wood you'd like to use.
It's common to use two different types of wood, with one being darker than the other. That way, you can create two opposing sides for the chessboard. However, if you're inexperienced, you may benefit from working with just one type of wood to start. You can stain the pieces in different colors.
Begin by taking the first block of wood and carving it down to size. Mount it on the lathe. Turn on the lathe, and press the cutting tool up to the turning piece of wood to begin carving it.
You're not aiming to shape the wood perfectly at this point, but you should try to get rid of any excessive wood chunks that will get in the way of detailed work. The part of the process that takes the most practice is the fine carving. When you have the wood carved down to size, begin by addressing the tops and bottoms of the piece.
Use your design as a model to guide you in your cuts. For pawns and other pieces that need to be duplicated, consider using a lathe duplicator to make exact replicas of each. More specific fine carving tools can be used for this, though many people prefer to remove the unfinished pieces from the lathe and complete small details using a detail knife instead. If you enjoy chess and have either a scroll saw or a band saw, you might want to try your hand at creating your own unique chess set.
You play chess with six different pieces: pawns, rooks, knights, bishops, and kings. To create your chess pieces, first select two contrasting woods.Pip install hashcat

Next, place pattern over the corner of a blank using either a spray adhesive or clear packaging tape. Make sure the crease lines up perfectly with the corner. Next, saw the first side profile making long continuous cuts. After this cut, use glue or clear tape to reattach the waste cut-outs so the pieces do not move. Next rotate the workpiece 90 degrees and cut the second pattern out.
Finally sand and finish. Before starting you might want to read Essential Scroll Saw Tips. You will shape the pawns, rooks, queens, and bishops with two identical cuts.
However, for the bishop, you will make an additional slot on the second cut. For the kings and knights, you will need to make two different cuts. The images below show how to create the compound cuts also known as double sawing or three dimensional 3D sawing. See Chess rules to learn how to play chess. Do not judge your work until after sanding.

Sand and finish piece.Lathe turning is a traditional art that has produced some fantastic pieces of wood throughout the centuries, from very complex chairs and tables to tiny chess pieces. Making chess pieces from wood lathes is a hobby all of its own and can provide many happy hours of relaxation, creating perfectly beautiful pawns, rooks, and bishops.
Some parts of the chess board are more complicated to make than others, so if you are just starting out in the lathe turning world, you may prefer to make a number of pawns before you begin on difficult pieces, such as the knights. The first thing that you will need to do is to make a chess set design. You can either get these from books, or from places on the Internet. You may find that, rather than copying a pattering that you find, you wish to adapt it.
The finished design should be a life-size model of what you want the pieces to look like, but in two dimensions, rather than three. If you want to make more than basic round pawns, then you will need to do both portrait and profile designs of your piece.
As a novice, you might want to just concentrate on the pawns to start with. You may also want to make your pieces out of all one type of wood, such as a balsa or bass wood, while those with more experience might like to use two different types of wood, one darker than the other.
Before you begin to carve, cut your wood block into a piece small enough to cut the pawns out of. You may need to cut several of each block in order to cover any mistakes that you might make.
Use your design to tell you where you should make your cuts in the piece. Start out by defining the tops and bottoms, and then move down each side. Even if you are making the chess pieces using a lathe turning process you may still need to use a sharp knife for complicated details, such as the underside of the knight's head.
When you are making the pawns, you may opt to use a lathe duplicator, which can make identical copies of each piece you turn. Once you have finished the turning, you should sand down all of your pieces using the sandpaper, and then either varnish or use a wood paint to define the pieces.
Those who have used one single wood for all the pieces will need two wood stains, one light and one dark, to finish the pieces. Leave them to dry. We welcome your comments and suggestions. All information is provided "AS IS.

The construction of all the other pieces is similar to the King. The 6 pieces which make up the crown can be made from ice block sticks. I made 2 White and 2 Black Queens to allow for Pawns being promoted. The 7-sided block on the top is cut from a 15 mm wood cube, with two cuts going from the diagonal of one face to the corner of the opposite face.
If 15 mm wood blocks are not available, you could make them by laminating two 15 mm x 15 mm pieces of 7 mm plywood. The rhombic pieces are cut from 7 mm plywood. The horse's head is made from 2 identical parts cut from 7 mm plywood with a coping saw. An excellent game, equally as intriguing as western chess and well worth learning. The Black pieces can be stained with a dark wood stain, and all pieces finished with 3 coats of urethane oil varnish.
If desired, the bases may be weighted with small lead balls fishing sinkers to give them a better feel. The sinkers can be glued into holes drilled in the base.
After this, circles of felt can be glued to the bases. I used some dressmaking pins to add "pearls" and eyes to the pieces, but this is also optional. Introduction: Wooden Chess Set. By kymyst Follow. More by the author:.

While I have read books, being able to go through exercises and get feedback was critical. I do not believe I would have come to such an understanding on my own without this course.
I am only beginning to use SEM. Without the course I would have lacked the understanding and confidence to try and use SEM.
I now feel confident that I could apply one of the models and use the results for work purposes and publication. This is very good. The explanation is so clear and practical. The problems are very good.
